Man arrested for assaulting 11-year-old girl in New York park

Nathaniel DiRenzo faces charges after girl hit and strangled in Manhattan park in clash between dog owners and schoolchildren

A man who attacked an 11-year-old black girl in a New York City park last week is now in custody.

Nathaniel DiRenzo, 29, who police said punched the girl during a confrontation in Stuyvesant Square Park, was arrested on Saturday, New York Daily News reports.

The attack took place outside the Manhattan Park dog park where children from a nearby school gathered during midday recess. The incident erupted after children threw dirt and snappers over a fence in the dog park, prompting dog owners to confront the students after an adult supervisor failed to control the scene, according to the report.

Some of the other dog owners started yelling at the children, including DiRenzo who got angry and yelled at the chaperone.

“Catch her before I put my hands on her,” he said, as reported by New. “You are terribly embarrassing… I can’t believe they are paying you to do this.” “

This prompted the 11-year-old to confront him, who then turned his attention to her.

“You big little bi-h. You will have nothing in life, ”DiRenzo told the girl.

Police say DiRenzo grabbed the girl by the hair and punched her in the head. At one point, he grabbed her by the neck.

A 15-year-old boy came to the aid of the girl, which caused DiRenzo to hit him as well. The scene was captured in a video posted to YouTube which is currently private.

Witnesses say DiRenzo then fled. One of these witnesses, a dog owner named Pete Ghiorse, tried to defuse the altercation, then saw DiRenzo escape.

“I didn’t know what was going on, so me and another guy walked in the middle and broke up,” Ghiorse said. WABC-TV. “I think he heard the sirens, and he booked it.”

Another witness, Wendy slater, understood DiRenzo’s frustration with the children coming to the park.

“There is no supervision,” Slater said. WABC-TV. “It has been going on for years. It was the right thing about COVID. They weren’t there.

The girl was taken to Mount Sinai Beth Israel in stable condition. The 15-year-old defending her was treated on site for minor injuries.

DiRenzo has been charged with second degree strangulation, two counts of acting in a manner prejudicial to a child, second degree harassment and two counts of assault, as reported by the New York Post.

He was arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Saturday and released on $ 7,500 bail.
