LONDON — A man has been arrested after a car slammed into the gates of Downing Street, the residence of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Thursday night.
The Metropolitan Police said in a statement that a car “collided with the gates of Downing Street in Whitehall” at around 4.20pm local time.
“Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving,” London police added.
Footage from the scene shows the car driving through Whitehall – home to several key government departments – and approaching the main entrance to Downing Street, which is heavily guarded by police. He seems to slow down before hitting the doors.
The BBC and Press Association news agency reported that Sunak was at 10 Downing Street at the time of the visit, but then left on a pre-planned visit.
“No injuries were reported,” the Met said. “Investigations are ongoing.”
