Malta’s Fearne resigns, ends Commission bid and maintains innocence – POLITICO

In 2023, a Maltese court annulled the government’s deal with VGH, which was taken over by Dallas-based Steward Health Care in 2018, after finding that both companies had failed to meet all their obligations.

At least 24 individuals are involved in the scandal and will all be charged with various crimes, according to the Times of Malta.

“I would have preferred to have been informed of the charges and the record of the magisterial investigation into VGH/Steward before taking action,” Fearne wrote. “But as it appears that this process will take time, it is not possible for me to wait any longer. The country, including its democratic and European institutions, deserves no less.”

Fearne said her resignation “in no way implies that I have any doubt about my innocence. I am taking it only because it is the right thing to do.”

He stressed once again that three National Audit Office reports cleared him of any “significant involvement” in the Vitals deal. “In all my roles, I have always acted with integrity, rectitude and strictly within the bounds of the law,” he wrote.
