Major transfers in football this summer

The 2022 summer transfer window has been packed with big moves and there is still plenty of time for more deals to be completed before it closes.

With that in mind, we take a closer look at some of the major transfers in football this summer, starting with one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe.

Erling Braut Haaland – Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City

After winning the Premier League title in four of the last five years, it came as no surprise when leading bookmakers listed them as favourites to win another this season.

The best betting sites were forced into cutting City’s odds even further after they splashed the cash to sign prolific striker Erling Braut Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.

The 21-year-old has run riot in the Bundesliga and is fully expected to terrorise defences in the Premier League over the next few years.

City have lacked a top-class striker since Sergio Aguero left the club – they now have a replacement who could rip up the record books at the Etihad Stadium.

Robert Lewandowski – Bayern Munich to Barcelona

While banking around £40 million for a 33-year-old with one year left on his contract may seem like a good deal, Bayern Munich did not want to lose Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish striker scored a whopping 344 goals in 375 appearances for the Bundesliga outfit, but decided he wanted to test himself in La Liga.

Despite their well-documented financial issues, Barcelona have handed Lewandowski a bumper three-year contract with the option for a further 12 months.

Lewandowski has guaranteed goals over the past few years – it will be intriguing to see if can continue doing the same in a different environment.

Aurelien Tchouameni – Monaco to Real Madrid

Having won the La Liga and Champions League double last season, Real Madrid have not made the mistake of resting on their laurels this summer.

While Madrid’s midfield of Toni Kroos, Luka Modric and Casemiro is still one of the best in European football, the trio are now in the veteran stage of their respective careers.

Aurelien Tchouameni was widely viewed as one of the hottest properties in Europe following some stellar performances for Monaco, and his signing is a major coup for Madrid.

With Eduardo Camavinga already at the Bernabeu Stadium, the La Liga giants have a pair of French midfielders who could dominate football over the coming years.

Darwin Nunez – Benfica to Liverpool

There have been suggestions in some quarters that Liverpool have overpaid to secure Darwin Nunez’s services, but that is unlikely to be the case.

The Reds have shelled out £64 million plus add-ons to buy a striker who netted 34 goals in 41 appearances for Benfica last season.

With Sadio Mane signing for Bayern this summer, Nunez will form a new-look front three for Liverpool alongside Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.

Given the 23-year-old should bag plenty of goals in that set-up, he could be a serious contender to win this season’s Premier League Golden Boot award.
