Lawrence Okolie got the job done against Michal Cieslak on Sunday night and now the unification fights he so desperately wants are on the horizon.
The Sauce earned a unanimous decision victory over the stubborn Pole at the 02 Arena to retain their WBO cruiserweight title in the presence of IBF cruiserweight champion Mairis Briedis.
Okolie looked like he got the stoppage during the contest, but winning and making sure he’s in line to fight his fellow champions is all that mattered to him.
“Paramount,” Okolie said, when asked if getting the “W” was the most important thing. “It’s good to have this learning under my belt. I thought when I dropped it in the fifth, I’d close the show…”
Earlier on the show, Briedis responded to Jake Paul by saying he didn’t know who he was and calling him “Mario” while disguising himself as Super Mario while working as a combat expert.
He was still in costume when he got up on the apron to talk to Okolie after his win. Okolie was asked what he would say to Briedis after his performance and the 18-0 fighter replied, “He looks like a clown and I’ll show him that.”
Briedis then said, “Congratulations from me. And also, I hope you feel really good after too many head punches,” the Latvian said in broken English.
“I have a little present for you. Hope you take it,” Briedis said after handing Okolie a McDonalds bag.
“He’s a real man, he’s a very strong man and hopefully after Australia we come back to London and fill that arena.”
The joke with the McDonalds is that Okolie worked there before becoming a boxer. Now it is actually sponsored by them.
When Eddie Hearn was asked about doing the fight, he said Briedis was on “another planet” in reference to his eccentric outfit and acting, and Okolie understood that Briedis was on another level for him. as a fighter, which Hearn quickly corrected. .
Briedis has a date with Jai Opetaia in Australia at some point this year and dealing with this mandatory challenger is his first task.
