Mainstream Republicans are like the ‘violent’ people who attacked Jan. 6

Nation Justice correspondent Elie Mystal said Thursday on MSNBC’s “The Beat” that mainstream Republicans are “violent” people.

Asked about reports that several Republican lawmakers were set to impeach former President Donald Trump after the riot at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, Mystal said, “These men are cowards. We know they were cowards. We know they are cowards and would stoop for Donald Trump.

He added: “But I think what this report shows, that we need to start thinking about a little more intentionality in the media, who are these people afraid of? Because at the end of the day, they’re not afraid of Donald Trump. They are afraid of its violent base. They are afraid of the very people who attacked them on January 6th. Because you’re not going through all of this, you’re not going through all of this literal bowing and scratching crazy just because you’re afraid that Donald Trump is a scary big man. No, you are afraid of his voters.

Mystal concluded, “The reason McConnell goes from yes to no impeachment, the reason Graham goes from yes to no, they know they couldn’t win the Republican nominations if they impeach Donald Trump because that they know what his base thinks. We need to stop acting like the Republican base is a sideshow. No, that’s mainstream Republican politics. These are the people who have attacked the nation and will continue to attack the nation until we as a smart society do something about it.
