Maine’s yellow flag gun law under scrutiny after mass shooting

This week’s mass shooting in Lewiston, Maine, has focused new attention on a unique state law designed to prevent such tragedies.

Maine’s measure, the only one in the country known as a “yellow flag” law, was passed in 2019. It is a narrower version of the “red flag” laws in force in 21 states that allow authorities to temporarily seize weapons from people who constitute a danger to themselves or others.
