Madrid building explosion kills at least two

A strong explosion of unknown origin occurred on Wednesday, January 20 in the afternoon, in a building in the center of Madrid, according to Spanish National Television (TVE) and witnesses.

At least two victims are to be deplored, according to the mayor of the city, José-Luis Martinez-Almeida. The explosion also left an unknown number of people injured, he said, adding that their injuries would be “Light”. According to TVE, the explosion, “Very powerful”, destroyed three floors of the building, which is located near a retirement home.

A column of smoke could be observed in the central district of the Spanish capital where the detonation sounded and the police evacuated the area.

Government sources quoted by the channel Sexta TV said that it could be an explosion caused by a gas leak.
