Madrid announces major vaccination plan against Covid-19

The head of the Spanish government Pedro Sanchez announced on Sunday an ambitious vaccination plan against Covid-19, from which a large part of the population could benefit by the summer of 2021.
The Spanish government is betting big on the Covid-19 vaccine. After eight months of anguish and more than 42,000 dead, Madrid announced, Sunday, November 22, a major vaccination plan against Covid-19 to protect a large part of the population by next summer.
“Our forecasts are that, in all reasonable scenarios, a very substantial part of the Spanish population will be able to be vaccinated, with all guarantees, during the first semester”, declared the head of government, Pedro Sanchez, during a displacement in the region of La Rioja (north).
As the peak of the second wave seems to have passed, the socialist leader assured that Spain would be “the first EU country, along with Germany, to have a comprehensive vaccination plan” for its 47 million citizens .
This plan should be adopted Tuesday at the next Council of Ministers, he said, adding that his government had been working on its preparation since September and that Spain had “significant logistical infrastructure” for the distribution of vaccines.
Last test phase
These statements come as promising announcements multiply for the commercialization of the long-awaited vaccines.
On Wednesday, the Spanish Medicines Agency authorized the launch in the country of the last phase of a two-dose vaccine trial from the American group Johnson & Johnson, which will also be carried out in eight other countries.
A month ago, Madrid gave the green light to the future purchase of 31.5 million doses of the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, as part of an order from the European Commission to this company pharmaceutical company involving the purchase of 300 million doses for the whole of the EU.
The Spanish government is also closely following the work of the Pfizer / BioNTech alliance, which announced on Friday that it would file an emergency authorization request to market its vaccine in the United States that same day.
