MacKenzie Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has donated a record $275 million to abortion provider Planned Parenthood.
Scott’s $275 million donation is part of his pledge to donate the majority of his wealth. Scott walked away with a 4% stake in Amazon after his divorce from Bezos. Scott’s donation is the largest in Planned Parenthood history.
The multi-million dollar donation comes as legal scholars anticipate Roe vs. Wade could be overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court this quarter.
In their statement acknowledging Scott’s donation, Planned Parenthood said 2021 “was the worst year for abortion rights since Roe vs. Wade was decided in 1973.
While conservative states like Texas and Mississippi have recently passed laws restricting access to abortion, the liberal state of California has just passed a law making abortion free for those who want it.
Planned Parenthood president and CEO Alexis McGill Johnson said Scott’s donation will help black women, who “will be most affected by the loss of access to abortion in the South and Midwest. “.
“This funding will support our efforts to advance health equity by breaking down racial and structural barriers for our patients in the communities where Planned Parenthood works,” Johnson said, adding:
Starting with the Black Health Experience in partnership with local communities, we see an opportunity to not only improve health outcomes for Black patients, but to transform the way all patients, especially those of color and those in rural and low-income communities, live our efforts in health care, education and organization.
Scott announced that she has donated more than $3.8 billion to 465 different nonprofits, including Planned Parenthood, since last June. “Over the past nine months, our team has focused on new areas, but as always, our focus has been on meeting the needs of underrepresented people from groups of all kinds,” Scott wrote in an article for blog on Wednesday.
Forbes The magazine reported that Scott was worth around $49 million on Wednesday.
