Machete-wielding man robs two other people in Logan Square, Belmont Gardens

CHICAGO (CBS) – A machete-wielding man robs two other people in the Belmont Gardens and Logan Square neighborhoods on Saturday night. The thefts took place after Chicago police issued an alert for similar thefts over the past week.

Police say at around 8:20 p.m., a 44-year-old woman was walking on the 3000 block of North Christiana when an unknown person approached her from behind. The perpetrator caught the victim’s attention by talking before demanding the victim’s personal property.

The assailant removed personal items from the victim’s possession and fled, police said.

Less than an hour later, at approximately 8:52 p.m., a 28-year-old woman was crossing the street with a 7-month-old boy, on the 4100 block of West Wellington, when a silver sedan nearly slammed into her. The driver of the vehicle apologized before leaving.

The woman and child entered a nearby alley when the driver reversed and entered the alley where the victims were. The assailant then got out of the car and, while waving a sharp object, demanded his property, police said.

The assailant then got into the vehicle and fled.

CPD on Saturday issued an alert to community members in the neighborhoods of Avondale, Logan Square and Irving Park of recent armed robberies involving a man armed with a machete.

The assailant is described as a white Hispanic male, 25-30 years old, between 5’04” and 5’06”, 150 lbs, with fair complexion and curly hair. It is also believed that a second offender was driving the vehicle during one of the thefts.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Area Five Detectives at 312-746-7394.
