Luis Diaz’s stats on Liverpool’s Premier League debut show why Danny Murphy, Jurgen Klopp and Andy Robertson are so excited about the ‘excellent’ new signing

Liverpool’s new star Luis Diaz was quick to impress on his first Premier League start in the 2-0 win over Leicester.

Diogo Jota struck twice, but with his talent already clear, eyes were on Diaz following the Colombian’s £37.5million move from Porto.

The 25-year-old has been thrown into the deep end, with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah both unavailable to start, despite only having a full week of training with the Reds.

Nonetheless, Diaz looked the part, topping the charts for shooting and dribbling, while successfully winning eight duels – the second most of any player on the pitch.

The striker showed serious attacking threat but also fierce off-the-ball aggression, and former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy saw plenty of reason for the fans to get excited.

“I thought the highlight of the night was Diaz’s new signing,” Murphy told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“Jota was the first player to come to Liverpool and get people talking about how the top three of Salah, Mane and Firmino don’t have to be the next five years.

“Now Diaz has come in, and for your first performance at Anfield for a young lad, his touch and awareness – what a player!”

Manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, was stunned at how well he’s fitting in after such a short time at the club, despite an apparent language barrier.

“He is already looking at the house. That’s exactly the impression he made in training, so we thought, let’s try,” Klopp said.

“When we saw him play for Porto, we thought that was exactly what we wanted him to do as well.

“Besides that, he looks like a very smart football player and has obviously watched Liverpool a lot.

“We never try to overload a new player with too much information in the first week and give him too much about what we want him to do, but when you look at him he already looks like a Liverpool player.

“In the final minutes, when he came against Cardiff and now [against Leicester] the situation was made for it.

“Sadio came home [from Senegal] last night and is probably still in bed and Mo Salah, after playing 120 minutes four times [for Egypt]it was clear that it would not start.

“So that was the situation and Luis obviously enjoyed the game.”

Full-back Andy Robertson has also been impressed with Diaz in training and believes the forward’s aggressiveness will make him a crowd favorite at Anfield.

“His first training session, I saw him fly and thought ‘he’ll be fine here’,” Robertson told BT Sport.

“Look, we have to let him sleep, he obviously still has the language to learn and the way we play and everything.

“I thought for his first start he was great today. The fact that he’s flying into tackles today – that’s a way of getting the crowd to like you straight away and I think that they really enjoyed it.
