Liverpool are set to win the Premier League title this season as former Man City boss Stuart Pearce also announced that Luis Diaz would be crowned player of the year.
The England legend was hugely impressed with Jurgen Klopp’s side as they beat City 3-1 to win the Community Shield on Saturday.
Liverpool were on top from the first whistle to the last and secured a deserved victory in style, thanks to new £85million star Darwin Nunez firing in a late goal.
By comparison, City have looked at the pace at times, with Pep Guardiola’s players seemingly not on the same page as their new striker Erling Haaland, who put on a frustrated figure in an isolated performance.
Man City have once again been widely tipped for title glory, with many expecting Haaland’s arrival to knock them out of sight at the top of the table.
But, based on evidence from Saturday, it looks like the partnership will take time, while Pearce believes Liverpool are ‘hungrier’ than their rivals after their close battle last season.
Liverpool have lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup but failed to add the Premier League and Champions League titles as well – and Pearce insists it will be the fuel for another stunning campaign for Klopp’s team.
“If you ask me who I think will win the league this year, it will be Liverpool,” the talkSPORT pundit said, speaking live from the King Power Stadium commentary box.

“Personally, with City winning the league twice in a row, I think it takes a few percent off.
“I think Liverpool will be a bit hungrier and their attacking options are so outstanding. So yes, I think they are and they will beat Man City this year.
“They have something to prove in the Premier League. I think it will be a great battle and I can only see them play each other again. If another team breaks in there I would be a little surprised.
“Thanks to City, they’ve raised the bar yet again, but these two are going against each other and I think Liverpool could do well.”
As Liverpool fans went crazy for Nunez, the likes of Mohamed Salah and Diaz also impressed with a spirited performance from the Reds’ front men.
It’s fair to say Klopp’s side look weaker on paper following star Sadio Mane’s departure to Bayern Munich earlier this summer, but Pearce insists Diaz could become a stronger player and goalscorer more powerful.
And he believes the Colombian will have a stunning first full season in the Premier League and be the most successful player in the English top flight.
“I think Diaz could be player of the year,” Pearce said.
“I was so impressed with Diaz last season, the way he started, his goals, his effort. He’s almost unwavering on the ball, I like him a lot.
“Will Liverpool miss Mane, of course, but I think Diaz could be a slightly better player and a better goalscorer.
“I think he could be a special player this year. What a talent.
“And Nunez, I had certainly been impressed with him before his move to Liverpool, but in today’s display he had a real impact, good energy, he will offer more movement behind.
“He gave Liverpool a different dimension. Liverpool had wonderful options all over the pitch, they had movement and pace, but in Nunez they now have someone who plays to the point of the team, who is happy to run behind, who has a physical presence, he just offers them something different on top of everything they already have.
“They’ve got a front three that’s got pace, power, can run behind, take the ball and come up against you, and then you’ve got Jota outside of that, and he’s just been brilliant and moved up a level since then. his Wolves days, and Firmino who also gives you a different kind of attacking option.
“Wow, they have so many options. If Liverpool can keep things tight at the back for me, I think they will win the division this season.
“Before the game people were writing Liverpool, but after watching them for 90 minutes with Nunez, Salah and Diaz in form, you think, ‘Wow.
“I don’t know who is spreading the word that they are not ready for the season – whoever it is, I think they got it horribly wrong.”
