Five people have been arrested as investigators continue to piece together the moments that led to the death of an off-duty Los Angeles police officer who was gunned down while searching for a home with his girlfriend .

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said three men and two women were arrested Tuesday afternoon as part of the investigation into Fernando Arroyos’ death.

None have yet been charged with the murder, the department said. Their names have not been released.

Arroyos, 27, was a three-year veteran and was assigned to the Olympic division of the Los Angeles Police Department. He was killed Monday during a robbery attempt in South Los Angeles.

The officer was with his girlfriend in an alleyway taking photos of a property they wanted to buy when a van pulled up nearby.

Several suspects came out and confronted the couple. Arroyos exchanged gunfire with the suspects, LAPD chief Michel Moore said on Tuesday.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and took Arroyos to hospital, where he later died in their patrol car. He leaves behind a mother and a stepfather.

“He had a bright future, a bright future that was viciously blown away by a street robbery,” Moore said.

Investigators found two guns at the scene. One belonged to Arroyos and the other would belong to one of the suspects.
