PHILADELPHIA CREAM — More than a dozen people have been arrested after a massive group of young looters ransacked businesses in Philadelphia.
The chaos began around 7:30 p.m. after numerous 911 calls reported a large group of juveniles, perhaps as many as a hundred, moving around downtown.
Video captured a group of people taking items out of a Foot Locker store around 8 p.m. An Apple and Lululemon were ransacked, and police believe other stores in the area were also hit.
A woman says she was sitting with friends at a nearby bar on 18th Street when she saw people ransacking a store.
“I saw a group of people walking into Lululemon, clothes everywhere,” she recalls.
Police said the anarchy was not related to an earlier protest following the fatal police shooting of Eddie Irizarry.
“What we had tonight was a group of opportunistic criminals taking advantage of a situation and trying to destroy our city,” said Acting Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Stanford.
Police say there may have been a caravan of vehicles moving from location to location looting businesses. As of midnight Wednesday local time, at least 15 to 20 people had been arrested, two weapons had been recovered and a police vehicle had been damaged.
No injuries were reported.
Stanford says officers will continue to make arrests until all individuals responsible are brought to justice.
