Longtime Met Gala Guest Laments 2024 Met Gala’s ‘Boring’ Style (Exclusive)

The 2024 Met Gala brought the stars to New York, and although it was the usual glamorous affair, one longtime attendee felt let down by fashion’s biggest night.

“It was a pretty tame rug,” the guest told PEOPLE. “It was the most boring and least exciting gala compared to previous years. The theme could have been exciting but other than Tyla, who killed it in the sand dress, the dresses weren’t as fascinating or crazy , nor weird, and it was a little slow – and less star power. There was no Rihanna or Taylor (Swift).

Although the insider called the event “boring” — aside from Tyla’s sand dress — there were some dramatic moments on the famous carpet. Cardi B wore a huge black Windowsen dress on the carpet that required nine assistants to help her carry it. Zendaya, who co-chaired the event, walked the steps twice. She first strutted her stuff in a vintage John Galliano peacock-inspired dress before changing into another vintage John Galliano look as old as she is (27 years old!).

The Met Gala veteran hailed Zendaya’s outfit change as the best “gimmick” of the night, but said there was no “unexpected moment” like there has been in years past, when Met Gala favorites put on a bigger show with their entrances.

“Kim Kardashian’s sweater didn’t do the trick,” adds the guest about the star’s accessory.

“When compared to the years (Vogue editor-in-chief) Anna (Wintour) stood at the top of the stairs to watch Lady Gaga’s entrance in an outfit that covered her from head to toe and she was surrounded by men in black suits with black umbrellas as “She was changing and ending up in a thong swimsuit — it was exciting,” the source told PEOPLE of the singer’s 2019 appearance. “Or when Katy Perry came to the dance-themed gala “camp” with a chandelier on his head. In the past it was stranger and more exciting.”

It wasn’t a total failure for this long-time participant, however. Insider raved about the gala itself (including the show) and the Costume Institute’s new exhibit, led by curator Andrew Bolton.

This year’s event, themed “Sleeping Beauties: Fashion Awakens,” may have been more “low-key,” according to the insider, but a few people stood out for their vibe.

Lauren Sánchez and Jeff Bezos “still look very in love,” the source said of their Met Gala debut appearance.

Pamela Anderson, who made her Met Gala debut this year, is “experiencing a whole new awakening,” according to insider notes, and the vibes shone through during her evening.

And Jennifer Lopez, who also co-hosted the evening in a custom Schiaparelli design, looked “luminous,” the guest said. “She’s even prettier in person. She looked stunning and it was her showgirl dress.”
