Longtime favorites Sox set to sign Oscar Colás originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
Oscar Colás, nicknamed the “Cuban Ohtani” at one point, is expected to join the Chicago White Sox organization soon.
Despite the ongoing lockout, Major League Baseball’s international signing period begins this weekend, and Colás is set to sign with the White Sox, who have long been described as the favorites to ink the 23-year-old outfielder. Colás posted photos of himself wearing White Sox clothes on social media, and reports from MLB.com and the Sun-Times confirmed that such an image would eventually become official.
At one point, Colás was trying to play the role of a two-way street player, much like reigning AHL MVP Shohei Ohtani. He has since given up on the pitching portion of his game, although at one point he hit 95 mph with his fastball, and focused on hitting and playing the outfield, where he can play all three positions.

Playing in the Japanese minor leagues in the 2019 season, Colás, a left-handed hitter, cut .302 / .350 / .516. He is expected to be an average hitter someday.
The expected signing would be a continuation of the hugely successful influx of Cuban talent from the White Sox into the organization. A legacy stretching back to the middle of the last century with the pioneer and recently elected Hall of Fame member Minnie Miñoso produced several stars currently on the team’s major league roster: José Abreu, Luis Robert, Yoán Moncada and Yasmani Grandal. , all key pieces for a championship contender. The minors, too, remained stocked with young Cuban players like outfielder Yoelquis Céspedes, infielder Yolbert Sánchez and pitcher Norge Vera.
Céspedes was the glowing international signing of the White Sox a year ago, the top ranked player in the class of 2021. Colás is ranked as the No. 5 prospect in this year’s class by MLB.com, the only one not -adolescent in the top 50.
