A 36-year-old man died after collapsing near the end of the London Marathon.

Organizers said he received immediate treatment between miles 23 and 24 and an ambulance arrived within three minutes, but later died in hospital.

The man was from south east England and no further details will be released as the family have asked for confidentiality.

The cause of death will be established later by a medical examination.

Organizers of the event said in a statement: “All involved in the organization of the London Marathon would like to express their heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”

More than 40,000 runners took part in Sunday’s event.

Kenyan Amos Kipruto won the men’s race in 2:04:39, while Ethiopia’s Yalemzerf Yehualaw was the fastest woman in 2:17.25.

Thousands of people lined the 26.2 mile course to cheer on the elite athletes and the masses of amateur runners raising money for charity.
