The ongoing migrant crisis in the state of Massachusetts has led many families to sleep on cots at Boston’s Logan Airport.
Although cots at Logan Airport are typically used for people whose flights have been canceled, they have recently been used to give migrant families a place to sleep while they wait for a chance to access the new program state housing. The airport’s crisis response team has “assisted more than 1,600 new arrivals” since July 11, according to WBUR.
“We’ll have people who haven’t eaten in days. And so, soldiers or employees (from Logan) bought 15 pizzas,” Kate Moore, director of emergency services for North Suffolk Community Services, told WBUR.
“We started sending only planes carrying people coming from Texas and other border states to Massachusetts and not knowing what they were supposed to do once they got to the airport,” she added. .
The airport can accommodate between six and 70 immigrants in need of assistance in a single night. Moore said she and her organizations began regularly sweeping the airport every morning looking for hungry and unhoused migrant families.
“Many of these families are at risk of ending up in the state-run family shelter system. A Massachusetts law guarantees many families the right to housing, and the state-funded system has seen a rapid increase in recent months. Over the past year, the number of cases has doubled to a record number of 6,453 families on Friday,” WBUR noted.
“This rapid increase in the number of family homeless people is partly due to new arrivals, many of whom have made arduous and lengthy journeys from Haiti to the United States,” he adds.
The migrant crisis in the state of Massachusetts has reached a level of emergency, with nonprofits under strain.
Democratic Governor Maura Healey even activated the National Guard to support the crisis.
“We are grateful to the brave men and women of the National Guard who stepped up to help us ensure that the needs of every family housed in an emergency shelter were met,” Healey wrote.
The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport), which oversees Logan Airport, said it would continually work with the government to ensure migrants have adequate housing.
“Logan is not an appropriate place to house people,” the statement said. “We continue to work with our state government partners on other solutions.”
