Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming gave a provocative final speech hours before facing a vote to purge her of the House Republican leadership for her outright repudiation of former President Donald J.’s election lies because her party has undermined democracy.
Ms Cheney, who faces a Wednesday morning vote that is almost certain to succeed in ousting her from the House Republicans’ No.3 position, said on Tuesday evening that the nation faced a threat “never seen before” at home. a former president who provoked the January 6 attack and who “resumed his aggressive efforts to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him.”
“Staying silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar,” Ms. Cheney said. “I will not participate in this. I will not sit and watch in silence as others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law and joins the former president’s crusade to undermine our democracy.
The remarkable Wyoming Republican side illustrated how she unrepentantly received the effort to dethrone her, and offered herself as an edifying tale in what she describes as a battle for the soul of the GOP. his almost certain expulsion from the leadership ranks as a “turning point” for his party and told his allies that the leadership position was just not worth having if it made him lie.
In her speech on Tuesday night, Ms. Cheney, a former State Department official, cited the parallel between what happened on Capitol Hill on January 6 and her work in authoritarian countries to explain why she was so determined to condemn publicly the attempted insurrection.
“Those who refuse to accept the decisions of our courts are at war with the Constitution,” Ms. Cheney said. “Our duty is clear. Each of us, who have taken the oath, must act to prevent the collapse of our democracy. It is not a question of politics. It is not a question of partisanship. It is our duty as Americans. “
