Liverpool’s quadruple talk this season is ‘crazy’, insists Jurgen Klopp, who reminds fans it hasn’t been done before

Jurgen Klopp has called it ‘crazy’ for Liverpool to win an unprecedented treble.

The Reds won their first trophy of the season by beating Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

On top of that, they are still in the FA Cup and Champions League and chasing a Premier League win.

Norwich await at home in Wednesday’s fifth round cup tie, live on talkSPORT 2 Inter Milan travel next week as they attempt to overturn a 2-0 deficit in the last 16 of the Champions League while the gap to league leaders Manchester City is six points with a game in hand.

While the general chatter about winning all four trophies may increase, Klopp isn’t even thinking about it.

“No team in the history of English football has won the treble, has it? It’s because it’s incredibly difficult,” Klopp said.

“We are still behind Manchester City (in the Premier League). We’re not about to think of crazy stuff like that.

“The only team that could win was us because we won the first final, but even City, with all the quality they have in recent years, couldn’t win the treble.

“That pretty much says it all. It’s really tough and that’s why no one has to curb the excitement.

“The reality of winning anything is that you have to focus on the next step and not the one after that because if you do that you will struggle.

“We are close to nothing at the moment. It’s better for people to think we can do good things than we’re useless, but that’s not important or useful.

“We just want to think about Norwich (in the FA Cup on Wednesday).”

There will likely be plenty of changes for the struggling Norwich visit with the six players – Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Fabinho and Mohamed Salah – who played the full 120 minutes at Wembley unlikely to figure.

Klopp was set to make changes for the cup game regardless with another three intensive weeks ahead, but midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who pulled out of the squad at the weekend after quitting complains of a tight hamstring, will not be available until next Tuesday’s Inter Milan match at the earliest.

The Wembley celebrations were relatively short with another game so close and Klopp doesn’t think there will be a focus problem for the FA Cup.

“The party was in the locker room, then we were all on the bus waiting for Caoimhin (who was in doping control).

“Then we had loud music on the bus, no music on the plane, maybe a little in the cars, then home at 12:30.

“So you can’t sleep, or at least I can’t, and we gave the boys the day off yesterday.”

“I don’t think it’s a big deal, it’s quite rare that you win something and then the whole decisive part of the season has just started.

“I am convinced that we take the game very seriously.”

Klopp also played down the seriousness of Harvey Elliott’s celebrations after the FA demanded an explanation for why he celebrated on the pitch while holding a smoke canister.

“He made a mistake, but only because of the model we have as people working in public. I’ll tell him, I can promise he won’t do it again,” the manager said.

“Do I think this is the worst thing that has happened in the world of football? No.

“But in the moment I got carried away and I’m almost four times his age, so it can happen.”
