Liverpool FC player ratings v Fulham: Darwin Nunez makes fine debut but Trent Alexander-Arnold struggles

Liverpool struggled to catch up on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season as Fulham earned a deserved draw in west London.

Here’s how Jurgen Klopp’s side rated Craven Cottage…

Alison 6

Could have done better with the goal but little time to react. Went the right way for the penalty but couldn’t hold it off.

Trent Alexandre-Arnold 4

Bullied at the far post by Aleksandar Mitrovic for Fulham’s opener and unable to provide the usual attacking threat.

Joel Matip 5

The hesitation gave Mitrovic a chance in the opening minute and looked a yard away throughout.

Virgil van Dijk 5

Left a leg dangling when Mitrovic won the penalty as any contact was minimal.

Andy Robertson 6

Crucial block to stop Harrison Reed on the volley and almost create two big chances with terrific deliveries from the left.

Fabinho 5

Not used to being passed over in midfield, but spent almost an hour here before being substituted.

Jordan Henderson 6

Down injured as Fulham broke for the opener and were rightly aggrieved for not having had a free-kick. Almost won by hitting the bar with a brilliant shot in stoppage time.

Thiago Alcantara 5

Crunched between two Fulham players in the early exchanges that set the tone for an afternoon where he didn’t get an inch. Off injured shortly after the break.

Luis Diaz 6

Nailed early on by Kenny Tete’s reckless challenge but grew and hit the post with a dogged effort. Liverpool’s best attacking outlet in the first half.

Roberto Firmin 4

Never involved and lasted six minutes after the break before Klopp turned to Nunez. Not the sort of performance you want when trying to keep an £85million signing out of the side.

Mohammad Salah 7

A remarkably subdued first hour of the season for one of last season’s standouts, but he came alive and scored the first leveler before scoring the second himself.

Harvey Elliott (Thiago 51′) 5

Booed against his former club and didn’t make much of an impact.

Darwin Nunez (Firmino 51′) 8

Makes a huge difference. Tried to face Diaz when he should have shot, then thwarted by Rodak from close range, but took the goal brilliantly with a smart finish and had another cleared down the line before putting in places Salah’s tap-in. A loaded cameo.

James Milner (Fabinho 59′) 6

Fabio Carvalho (Diaz 77′) 6

Given a rather warmer welcome than Elliott and whipped not far from the bar on the fly.
