Liverpool confident of beating Manchester United to sign Darwin Nunez and preparing £68m bid plus add-ons and would ‘suit’ Jurgen Klopp’s side

Liverpool are confident of beating rivals Manchester United for the capture of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to talkSPORT.

The Reds put together a £68m offer up front plus performance-based add-ons that would ultimately see Nunez become their club record.

Virgil van Dijk is Liverpool’s current record signing when they paid Southampton £75m for his signing in January 2018.

United have already started compiling a list of potential alternatives for the Uruguayan hitman.

The 22-year-old has hugely impressive stats at Benfica, scoring 34 goals in 41 games for the Portuguese club last season.

It will also likely mean Sadio Mane’s exit from the club amid reports that Bayern Munich have had two offers rejected, the latest in the region of £30million.

European football expert Kevin Hatchard joined talkSPORT Drive on Wednesday and explained what Liverpool will get for their money.

“He’s really come through this season,” he said. “He was a good player before that, but he had some injury problems and was hit hard by Covid.

“The season before this one was a bit disrupted, but this season just ended, he’s been great.

“Top scorer in Primeira Liga in a Benfica team that was a bit of a hit or miss. They were never really in the title hunt and Porto won it quite comfortably.

“He was very impressive. Scored six Champions League goals so he looked really good against Liverpool and Barcelona.

“Jurgen Klopp has spoken highly of him publicly. He’s strong and has good acceleration.

“He’s someone who would suit Liverpool because he can play in the middle or on the left in a three.

“Who do we know who does this? Sadio Mane, who may be away. He would be a good replacement for Mane, even though he is a world-class player.

“You buy potential with Nunez.”
