Live updates: Trump returns to Washington DC to meet Republican allies

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio called the meeting with former President Donald Trump a “team replenishment” and a state-of-the-former president’s campaign update.

“Optimism, but there is still a lot of work to do,” Rubio said.

“It was a great meeting,” said Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. “President Trump was in a very good mood and focused on winning back the White House.”

Tennessee Sen. Bill Hagerty said the meeting was “good.”

Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville said the mood in the room was one of “unity and leadership,” which he said was “rare and not very present here.”

Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy said he was interested to see how Trump’s press conference went because he didn’t watch it.

“I was a way for the president to connect with the people who live in this city,” Cassidy said.

Asked if there were any discussions about Trump’s potential choice for vice president, Rubio laughed and said no.

Asked how the party could be united when some senior Republicans had previously blamed Trump for the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio said, “No real Republican with any credibility in the party is blaming him yet.”

“He expressed frustration about the recent trial, you can imagine, and rightly so in my opinion,” said Texas Sen. John Cornyn. He added that Trump did not mention Jan. 6.
