TOKYO – American gymnast Jade Carey won gold – and her first Olympic medal – in the individual floor exercises final at the Tokyo Olympics.

Carey, 21, from Arizona, became the only American competitor at the event after Simone Biles stepped down to focus on her mental health. Carey completed a complicated tumbling routine with a high degree of difficulty, scoring a 14.366.

She looked happy and relieved as she left the carpet. She also competed in the individual vault final, where she appeared to escape a more difficult maneuver and ultimately placed eighth.

Italy’s Vanessa Ferrari won silver and Japan’s Mai Murakami and Angelina Melnikova of the Russian team tied for bronze.

Tuesday, the last day of women’s artistic gymnastics, will see Biles return to competition. She will compete in the individual all-around final with Sunisa Lee, gold medalist in the individual all-around.
