133: #5 Sam Latona, Virginia Tech vs. Connor McGonagle, Lehigh

1st half: McGonagle is only unseeded because his teammate, redshirt freshman Ryan Crooham, has been on fire, already beating No. 1 Vito Arujau this season.

2nd period:

3rd period:

125: #1 Anthony Noto, Lock Haven vs. #4 Matt Ramos, Purdue

1st period: This was a match #1 against #2 at the start of the season. Since then, Noto has moved from No. 2 to No. 1 and Ramos has slipped a few spots from No. 1 to No. 4. Collar ties and a few half shots but no score after a minute. Same agreement after another minute. Difficult hand combat but not many attacks engaged. More jostling but no score so it’s a 0-0 first period.

2nd period: Noto chooses to go down to start the second. Noto rushed out. Ramos shoots and he’s on Noto’s legs. He converts for three and it’s 3-1, now 3-2 as Noto escapes again. Quick reminder, takedowns are worth 3 points in college starting this year! Noto now on a shot, it’s a scramble. 30 seconds left, still struggling. Noto gains height but Ramos finds a way to avoid the danger and maintain the whirlwind. No score as time runs out so it’s 3-2, 31 seconds of driving time, bot in favor of Ramos.

3rd period: Ramos chooses neutral. Slow and tactical pace. No stall warnings for either wrestler. There’s one minute left. At 30, Noto couldn’t find a way through Ramos’ defenses. There is a shot from Noto, Ramos catches him in a headlock. Noto tries to jump over and make something happen but Ramos was ready for him and he hits Noto in the back. He would collect four in the final seconds and make the score 10-2 after this five-point move. New number one at 125?

160: #1 Marlynne Deede, Iowa (NCAA) vs. #1 Latifah McBryde, Life (NAIA)

1st period: Deede is the only Hawkeye present at the All-Star Classic. She and McBryde are both ranked No. 1 among their respective collegiate associates. McBryde has two sisters who are also currently on the Lifetime wrestling team. Fierce hand fighting to start the period, Deede’s headlock attempt, it doesn’t hit, McBryde goes for a suplex, which doesn’t hit. They’re in a scramble, McBryde is exposed but Deede responds with a crotch lock and tosses McBryde for two more. It’s 2-2, with Deede in the lead via criteria. They wrestle towards the edge of the mat, they may have a broken head or an eye on McBryde, but she needs the trainer. She is fine and they return to wrestling, with McBryde having taken a step forward. 3-2, this is how the period ends in favor of Latifah.

2nd period: McBryde gains ground, they are at the edge of the mat, and Deede hip throws McBryde to his back and it will be before Hawkeye makes it 6-3 with 90 seconds left in the match. Now one (accidental) eye on Deede and we pause the action. Return to the center. Deede, on defense, takes the opportunity to get another counter block to ice him, and 8-3 is the margin of victory. Deede is the first female wrestler from Iowa to win the NWCA All-Star Classic!

Aycock stifles Nwachukwu’s next attack as he continues to advance, throwing a hook and knocking Aycock down for another takedown. 4-0 halfway through the first. Aycock shoots but is stopped. With 30 seconds left in the period, Aycock shoots again and runs Nwachukwu for a takedown and she’s on the board. 4-2 Nwachukwu leads a period.

2nd period: Nwachukwu immediately gets back to work after the whistle. Double leg converts for Adaugo which turns into a gut wrench which scores two more. It’s 8-2 at the start of the second period. Simultaneous shots, and Nwachukwu gets behind Aycock and two huge points for Adaugo in short order. One step with two seconds remaining and you can put it in the books. Great fight, 11-7 victory for Adaugo Nwachukwu!

136: Adaugo Nwachukwu (William Penn) VPO1 Yele Aycock (North Central), 11-7

130: #1 Sarah Savidge, Life (NAIA) vs. #2 Alexis Janiak, Aurora (NCAA)

1st period: No time wasted in this match, simple round from Janiak, clean finish and it’s two points ahead. Janiak has a locked lace. She takes Savidge for two more. Plenty of space to work. Three more rounds with the leg tie and it’s a technical 10-0 for Illinois’ Alexis Janiak!

130: Alexis Janiak (Aurora) VSU Sarah Savidge (Life), 10-0 0:31

116: #3 Sydney Petzinger, North Central (NCAA) vs. #2 Samara Chavez, King (NCAA)

1st period: We begin the 2023 edition of this historic event with the first of four women’s fights. The women’s matches will be freestyle. Back and forth in the first minute, then Chavez charges and fires a hip toss and Perzinger goes down to the mat, back first. Petzinger fights back and eventually gets a restart, leading 4-0 to Chavez. Chavez returns to the headlock but Petzginer stops the move, sticks his head out then comes back behind to force a takedown. Chavez responds with a double takedown to make it 6-2. Another head kick is missed by Chavez and once again Petzinger capitalizes with another takedown. Acton’s packed first period comes to an end, 6-4 ahead for Chavez.

2nd period: Petzinger goes on the offensive in this period. Gets the tie she wants and leaves on her return trip. Chavez adjusts and rips off another headlock, this one puts Petzinger back on his back. Chavez adjusts and squeezes and that’s all she wrote! Chavez by pinfall!
