Lightning advances to the Stanley Cup Finals

It’s been nearly 40 years since an NHL team won three consecutive Stanley Cups. It has been 20 years since any franchise in one of the “Big Four” sports leagues has won three consecutive championships.

The Tampa Bay Lightning now have a chance to end those two droughts.

The Lightning will face the Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Final, which begins at 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The Avalanche qualified for the championship by sweeping the Edmonton Oilers.

The last time Colorado qualified for the Stanley Cup Finals was in 2001, when they beat the New Jersey Devils in seven games.

Steven Stamkos netted both goals for the winners in Saturday’s 2-1 decider, while Ondrej Palat had two assists and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 20 saves. In the loss, the New York Rangers goal was scored by Frank Vatrano.
