Despite Hamilton’s victory in race one, Mercedes insists they stay on the back foot against a quick Red Bull early in the season – Wolff suggesting the W12 is dragging rivals’ RB16B “a bit” in a single qualifying round. .

“Bahrain still hasn’t been the strongest race for Red Bull and, besides, they haven’t been particularly good off the blocks. [The opening weekend] has shown that this is no longer the case in 2021 and so I have no doubt that they are extremely difficult to beat, ”added Wolff.

“They are the ones leading the peloton and I think the racing gods were on our side [in Bahrain].

“It’s not that we suddenly found impressive performances.”
