“Reading Rainbow” host LeVar Burton really wants to welcome “Jeopardy!” and an overwhelming number of people on the Internet are supportive.
Throughout this week, an online petition has circulated demanding that Burton be named guest host of the iconic game show.
“Between hosting 21 seasons of Rainbow Educational Reading, the role of intellectual engineer Geordi La Forge in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the role of Kunta Kinte in the all-important Roots miniseries, LeVar Burton inspired and shaped minds. generations of trivia nerds, ”reads the petition, which now has more than 160,000 digital signatures.
Burton himself shared the petition in an attempt to come forward as the host, tweeting late Monday: “Leave this here in case the powers that be are listening.”
The petition specifically calls on Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and producers Mike Richards and Harry Friedman to show them “how much audiences love Burton and how much we would all like to see him as the next host of ‘Jeopardy!’ “”
The show did not comment publicly on the petition and did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment on the matter.
In the wake of the old “Jeopardy!” Alex Trebek’s death last year, the show has had a number of guest guests at the helm, including former contestant Ken Jennings, Katie Couric, Green quarterback Dr. Mehmet Oz Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers and others.
Burton’s tweet has since racked up over 40,000 likes, and hundreds of fans both tweeted the petition and asked him to take on hosting duties. Among those fans are big stars like iconic actor and comedian Dick Van Dyke and late night TV host Stephen Colbert.
Burton did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for further comment.
