Lethal Company Becomes One of the Most Popular Steam Games Amid Viral Success


Lethal Company is an indie horror game that takes full advantage of the chaotic hilarity that cooperative multiplayer games can bring, and is quickly growing to over 100,000 concurrent players.

Although rare, there are a few indie multiplayer titles whose gameplay is innovative enough to make them viral hits. BattleBit Remastered and Among Us are great examples of indie games where content creators and passionate gamers do most of the marketing for them.

And it looks like Lethal Company is the next multiplayer title to see widespread success after going viral on social media, with videos of player accidents and shenanigans spreading across Twitter and YouTube. It’s no surprise that over 100,000 players wanted to have fun.

The young developer took to Twitter and celebrated his achievement, and he can’t wait to expand on Lethal Company’s incredibly successful formula.

Lethal Company is taking the Steam charts by storm

With over 97% of Lethal Company’s 18,000 Steam reviews being positive, players clearly like what developer Zeekerss has put together. It’s a deliberately simple horror game that finds complexity in the way players interact with each other and the world around them, making it a game that creates unforgettable scenarios and interactions with friends.

Players are tasked with exploring randomly generated levels to find enough scrap metal, trash, and trinkets to sell for their profit quota. Finding enough things to profit from will keep the player alive, but falling below this quota will result in death.

The high-stakes loot chase, combined with unique gameplay tools and well-implemented proximity chat, has created countless viral moments in the game, even though it’s less than a month old.

Whether you’re in on the action with your teammates or watching from afar, Lethal Company maintains enough tension to be a truly frightening horror experience while being light and comedic enough in its presentation to be accessible to those who aren’t generally not horror fans.

The game really hit critical mass after MoistCr1TiKaL (aka Charlie) I played it with Wendigoon and a few other friends in streaming.

This stream and Charlie’s subsequent YouTube video highlighting some of their best moments have helped propel this game to even greater heights as more and more players jump in to experience the game for themselves.

Dev Zeekerss was blown away by the overwhelming support for the game. A week after the game launched, they celebrated 1000 reviews. Now it’s 18,000 and I’m counting with it more than 100,000 simultaneous players.

For reference, Apex Legends has a 24-hour peak of 438,000 at the time of writing, while Rainbow 6 Siege has a 24-hour peak of 78,000. In less than a month, this small indie project beat a game live for a long time and has become one of the most popular games on Steam. At the time of writing, it is ranked 12th among all games on Steam for its 24-hour peak.

While this still doesn’t take into account Counter-Strike 2’s immense player base, it’s impossible to deny Lethal Company’s meteoric rise from a relatively obscure indie title to one of the most played games on Steam .
