Leicester City reject Newcastle’s £40m transfer offer for James Maddison as Chelsea ‘accept terms’ with Wesley Fofana

Newcastle United have seen a £40m bid for Leicester City star James Maddison rejected.

The offer was made on Friday but rejected by the Foxes, although they currently need to sell a player or two.

The attacking midfielder, 25, impressed last season with 18 goals and 12 assists in all competitions.

A recall to England has been mooted but so far Gareth Southgate has resisted giving the ex-Norwich star another chance.

Leicester, who are also fending off Chelsea’s interest in Wesley Fofana, are yet to sign any senior players this summer.

They must balance their books as they seek to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

However, they don’t want to be held to ransom for players they deem essential for the upcoming season.

Given Maddison’s playmaking skills, interest in his future will be high and his current deal has just two years to run unless Leicester make him an improved offer.

Following Newcastle’s win over Atalanta in a friendly on Friday night, manager Eddie Howe was asked about the prospect of making attacking signings.

He said: “Never say never, but as the days go by it seems more and more unlikely.

“However, the most important thing is that we get the right players, not the speed at which we get them.”

Meanwhile, the journalistIgnazio Genuardibelieve Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Leicester star Fofana but no offers have been accepted for the player.
