Leeds sack Marcelo Bielsa after hammering Tottenham leave club on edge of drop zone

Tottenham cruised to a 4-0 victory at Elland Road on Saturday, leaving the Yorkshire club just two points above the relegation zone in their second season back in the top flight.

After joining Leeds in the summer of 2018, Bielsa took the club to the Championship play-offs before winning the second-tier title a year later. Los Blancos finished ninth when they returned to the Premier League last campaign but currently sit in 16th place.

On Sunday, the club confirmed the decision with a rumored replacement, former RB Leipzig boss Jesse Marsch, to be appointed within the next 24 hours.

Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani said: “It was the hardest decision I’ve had to make during my time at Leeds United, given all the success Marcelo has had at the club.

“With Marcelo as head coach, we had three incredible campaigns and the good times came back to Elland Road. He changed the culture of the club and brought us all a winning mentality. The moments created, especially in the 2019/20 season and the winning promotion to the Premier League, will of course live long in all of our memories, myself and the fans included.

“However, I have to act in the best interests of the club and I believe a change is needed now to secure our Premier League status. Recent results and performances have not lived up to our expectations.

“We find ourselves in a precarious position in the league and I think it’s the right time to bring in a new head coach, in order to have an impact in the decisive phase of the season.

“Naturally, myself, along with everyone else at the club, would like to thank Marcelo for his efforts and achievements and we wish him the best for the future.”
