Led by Anthony Joshua and trained by SugarHill Steward, trainer of Tyson Fury, Olympic silver medalist Ben Whittaker puts pen to paper on professional contract with BOXXER

Following his exploits at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, light heavyweight boxer Ben Whittaker has signed a professional contract with promotion company BOXXER.

Whittaker lost to Cuban Arlen Lopez in the final in Tokyo, but won a silver medal to help Team GB Boxing win its biggest medal in over a century.

During his Olympic journey, Whittaker captured the hearts of the nation with his extravagant celebrations and wishes to become the mayor of his hometown of Wolverhampton and his dream came true as he was allowed to be mayor for a day after his return from Tokyo.

Whittaker also had his share of controversy during the Olympics, as he initially refused to wear his silver medal, saying, “You don’t make money, you lose gold. I am very disappointed with myself. I didn’t perform well,” but he later admitted he regretted his actions.

Alongside Lauren Price, Karriss Artingstall, Frazer Clarke and Caroline Dubois, Whittaker is the latest Olympian to join the BOXXER roster.

“Well, they always say save the best until the end and here I am,” Whittaker said. “I am very happy to open this new chapter of my career. It’s an exciting time for me to show off my skills.

“I’m now looking forward to getting into camp where I can add and develop my game. I hope you enjoy the trip because it’s going to be crazy.”

Rounding out his elite team, Whittaker is managed by the 258 Management of two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and he will be coached by Tyson Fury trainer SugarHill Steward.

Joshua has been a huge fan of Whittaker for a while, describing him as a “future champ”, and the heavyweight giant continued to sing his praises after it was announced he had signed for BOXXER.

“Ben is a really special talent with a fantastic amateur pedigree,” Joshua said. “He had some tough decisions to make turning professional, but now he’s finally here!

“Led by the best team in the game, 258 Management, I think he is ready to ignite the world boxing scene.

“Everyone is preparing for a special trip. Ben is the future star of the PPV.

One person best placed to assess Whittaker’s abilities and prospects as a professional boxer is his trainer, Steward.

“I am totally delighted to have been sought out and chosen by Ben Whittaker from the 2020 Olympics in Britain’s very talented and dominant boxing team,” he said.

“I consider Ben to be at the skill level of a Roy Jones Jr to go from amateur to professional world champion superstar.”
