Four months after returning to Côte d’Ivoire, the former Ivorian president launches his new party at a constitutive congress which opened on October 16 in Abidjan. In sight, the presidential election of 2025.
Back in his country after 10 years of absence, the former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo (2000-2011) launches this weekend of October 16 and 17 a new political fomation, the Party of African Peoples – Côte d’Ivoire with in sight, the presidential election of 2025.
The effigy of the former president was everywhere, at the prestigious Hôtel Ivoire in Abidjan, where more than 1,600 participants were expected for this launch.
“It is a major event which will undoubtedly be a date in the political history of Côte d’Ivoire”, launched this October 16 from the platform of the Congress Georges Armand Ouégnin, president of the organizing committee of the event . He was delighted with a new start for Laurent Gbagbo. “This is the great return of Laurent Gbagbo on the political scene,” for his part assured AFP Justin Koné Katinan, spokesman for the former head of state.
“We are a little fed up with corruption, nepotism, regionalism and ethnicism […]. We aspire to change ”declared one of the supporters of the former Ivorian leader at the microphone of our reporter Lilaafa Amouzou.
A new lease of life for the Ivorian opposition?
Will this new party influence a new dynamic for the Ivorian opposition? This is the conviction of Edith Pulchérie Gbalet, president of the Ivorian alternative association and opponent of current president Alassane Ouattara. “It could help unite the left [en raison de ses] Pan-Africanist aims. This could boost political life in general, ”she said.
