During his assessment last week, sports director Olivier Renard had indicated that there would be an announcement to this effect in the following days.

At the end of the loan from Bologna at the end of the month, the 23-year-old Finn will become the exclusive property of the Montreal club.

This is a three-season deal with an option year in 2025. The player has been reported to fall into the Allocation Money (AMT) category.

In 2021, a player had to make more than the maximum budgeted salary of $ 612,500 to fall under the TAM umbrella. This season, the attacking midfielder made $ 383,657.

Lappalainen arrived in Montreal during the 2019 season and left a good impression with five goals and assists in eleven appearances, including eight starts.

The following years were more complicated, however, as he was often slowed down by injuries.

Last year, he only played 13 games, compared to 15 this season. He first injured his shoulder at the end of the 2019 season. Then, a groin injury caused him to miss a month and a half last summer.

“Despite the fact that we could not count on him as much as we would have liked in 2021 due to injuries, we wanted to keep Lassi among us, because we know his qualities and we are convinced that he will return to the best of his abilities with good preparation, ”said sports director Olivier Renard in a press release.

In three seasons, Lappalainen played 37 regular season games in MLS. He scored ten goals and amassed four assists. His production has been more limited this season, with one goal and two assists in 13 games.

Besides injuries, Lappalainen may also have been held back by a certain lack of consistency.

During the last season, Wilfried Nancy tried to use him as a full-back in a three-center-back system, without much success. Lappalainen was struggling physically to do the task and made no secret that he was not a fan of the position.

It is as a winger that he offers his best performances, taking advantage of his speed and his ability to fit into the opponent’s area.

The question is how he can fit into the style of play advocated by Nancy this season. Unless the head coach intends to change his system with a defense that will undergo partial restructuring.

Lappalainen has also shown that he can have some bite as a substitute, but at over $ 600,000 a year it would pay dearly for a bench player.
