A Los Angeles police officer was shot and wounded near Newton station in southern LA on Thursday morning, officials said.
The circumstances leading up to the shooting, which occurred shortly after 5 a.m. near South Central Avenue and Jefferson Boulevard, were not immediately clear, LAPD captain Stacy Spell said.
The officer, who has only been described as a male, was rushed to a nearby hospital with an injury, Spell said. The information is very preliminary, but the officer was initially described as being in stable condition, authorities said.
A suspect has been arrested a few blocks from East 29th Street and Naomi Avenue, according to LAPD officer Lizabeth Lomeli.
Images near the police station show a pickup truck with damaged windows. Officers flooded the area and set up a perimeter. KTLA-TV Channel 5 video shows authorities marching on the road outside the station, scanning the area with flashlights in the pre-dawn darkness.
This report will be updated with additional information as it becomes available.
