Kyrie Irving’s future with the Brooklyn Nets looked in doubt at the start of last season when he was absent from the team due to his unvaccinated status. During that time, at least a few teams considered looking into the possibility of trading for the star keeper.
One of those teams, perhaps surprisingly, was the Los Angeles Lakers, according to SNY’s Ian Begley. The Lakers had internal discussions about a potential trade with Irving, but it doesn’t appear they ever moved beyond that.
There are several angles to this. One is that the Lakers were at least willing to think about pairing Irving with LeBron James despite their history. There were even rumors that Irving and Anthony Davis were at odds, which would have made things much harder to resolve.
It may also indicate that the Lakers sensed issues with Russell Westbrook early on and may have thought about changes fairly quickly. It was never seriously considered, but it all makes for an intriguing hypothesis.
