Joe Cole backed Kylian Mbappe over Erling Haaland to become football’s next greatest player.
However, the Chelsea and England legend doesn’t believe either player can match the levels of dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
France’s World Cup winner Mbappe and Manchester City superstar Haaland are seen by many as heirs to the thrones of Messi and Ronaldo at the top of the game.
Both had career-defining summers where Mbappe opted to turn down Real Madrid and sign a new contract at Paris Saint-Germain, while his 23-year-old rival left Borussia Dortmund for the Premier League.
Neither striker has skipped a beat despite their turbulent summers, with Norway’s Haaland scoring 12 goals in seven games and Mbappe nine in the same number of games.
It looks like Messi and Ronaldo’s dominance has come to an end, with neither set to win the next Ballon d’Or, an award the pair have dominated for 12 of the past 13 years.
But can Haaland and Mbappe instantly take over? Cole isn’t sure, as he explained on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE.
Referring to Eden Hazard, he said: “I think we’re going to see that with a lot of players in the post-Messi and Ronaldo era, his body just let him down.

“I know he wasn’t a great professional but his ankles are really bad right now.
“Messi and Ronaldo have had this flawless run for 15 years where they can just show us their talent.
“The next generation, Haaland and Mbappe, the only thing that can stop these two competitors is longevity, I don’t see Haaland playing the number of games.”
Asked by Ferdinand who has the better career, Cole continued: “I think Mbappe has it.
“The only reason is that Haaland will score more goals than any of them if he stays fit for a number of games, but Mbappe is more complete.
“I don’t think any of them will be as good as Messi and Ronaldo, I don’t think we’ll ever see that again.”
