Kylian Mbappé draws Kevin Durant comparisons after Real Madrid move – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Soccer star Kylian Mbappé has officially completed his free transfer to Real Madrid, with social media quickly comparing the move to Kevin Durant’s highly scrutinized July 2016 decision to join the Warriors in NBA free agency.

Mbappé, widely recognized as one of the greatest players on the planet, joins a Real Madrid team that just won the UEFA Champions League for the second time in three seasons, with social media drawing parallels with Durant joining Golden State in the process. -consecutive appearances in the NBA Finals.

The comparison is interesting, it should be noted that Durant joined a Warriors team that had just lost the NBA Finals, while Mbappé joined a Madrid team that had just won the most prestigious club trophy in the world without his services.

However, Durant joined a team with reigning MVP Steph Curry, and Mbappé joins a team with several Ballon d’Or contenders like Vinicius Jr. and Jude Bellingham.

Mbappé, 25, has spent the last seven seasons with Paris Saint-Germain, winning the Ligue 1 title – the top flight of French football – in six of those campaigns. Despite domestic success, Mbappé and PSG never managed to win the elusive Champions League trophy which Real Madrid won for a record 15th time last weekend.

The 25-year-old superstar is also captain of the France national team, playing a key role in the country’s 2018 World Cup title. Mbappé did everything he could in France’s 2022 World Cup final defeat to Argentina, scoring a hat-trick before ultimately losing on penalties to Lionel Messi.

Durant and Golden State have won back-to-back NBA Finals, falling just short of the three-peat after serious injuries derailed the Warriors’ championship hopes in 2019.

Pundits downplayed Durant’s accomplishments with Golden State — two Larry O’Brien trophies and back-to-back Finals MVP honors — because of the talent the Warriors already possessed before his arrival. Will Mbappé be held to the same standards if Madrid continues to dominate European football? Time will tell, but for now the comparison seems apt to many.
