Quarterback Kyler Murray’s quest for a new contract with the Arizona Cardinals has taken a turn, with NFL Network reporting Thursday that agent Erik Burkhardt has revoked his opening proposal.

The Cardinals have yet to make an offer to Murray.

Thursday’s report speculated it would be a ‘surprise’ if Murray played next season under his current rookie deal, which would see him paid $5.5m (£4.2) in 2022 .

Sports Illustrated added that Murray’s camp sees the draft – which starts in two weeks from Thursday – as a deadline for a new deal.

Drama began to boil in February when Murray deleted all references to the team from his social media. He later spoke out to call reports of a fractured relationship “nonsense” and said he only wants to win championships.

But two weeks later, Burkhardt released an all-caps open letter to the Cardinals that contained more than 1,000 words, detailing that Murray deserved a long-term contract after three seasons in the NFL.

According to Burkhardt, the offer he made “provides financial protection, is consistent with the current QB market which compares his results to relevant compositions, lowers his 2022-23 salary cap to allow the Cardinals to re-sign other teammates deserving players and adding additional free agents and, more importantly, represents a true commitment by the organization to see if their ultimate goals align.”

This offer, however, would be out of place. This offseason, four other quarterbacks – Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Deshaun Watson and Derek Carr – have signed extensions or new deals worth more than $40m (£30) a year. Minnesota-extended Kirk Cousins ​​is expected to average $35m (£26.8).

In 46 starts over three seasons, Murray threw for 11,480 yards, 70 touchdowns and 34 interceptions while completing 66.9 percent of his passes.

He added 1,786 rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns, won Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2019 and was named to the last two Pro Bowls.

In his playoff debut last season against the eventual champion Los Angeles Rams, Murray went 19-for-34 for 137 passing yards and two interceptions in a 34-11 loss. ESPN later reported that the Cardinals wanted Murray to improve as a leader, with unnamed sources describing him as self-absorbed and pointing finger.
