Kohli 166*, Gill 116 as dominant, India got 390/5 against Sri Lanka in 3rd ODI

Team India striker Virat Kohli smashed a stunning 166* from 110 balls as the hosts scored 390/5 against Sri Lanka after winning the coin toss and striking first in the third ODI at Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday January 15.

Kohli hit 13 fours and eight sixes in an incredible display of big shots, putting the Sri Lankan attack to the sword. The 34-year-old, who lifted his second tonne in the series and the third in his last four ODI innings, added 131 for the second wicket with fellow centurion Shubman Gill (116 from 97).

After looking in top form, Kohli got lucky on 82 as he went down to the ground against Lahiru Kumara and nearly landed a boundary hold. However, the defender misjudged the ball for a long time and ended up conceding six points.

There was a disturbing incident just before Kohli brought in his cent. Beating at 95, he fired a short ball from Chamika Karunaratne onside. Ashen Bandara and Jeffrey Vandersay, however, were involved in a massive square-leg boundary collision as they attempted to save the ball. The four brought Kohli to 99. He brought his 46th ODI ton on the next ball, making Karunaratne work long for a single.

The former India captain then unleashed a helicopter shot against Kasun Rajitha and secured himself a long-term max. Two sixes and a four followed his willow in the 45th over played by Karunaratne.

After Shreyas Iyer fell for a 32-ball 38, India lost KL Rahul (seven) and Suryakumar Yadav (four) in quick succession. However, Kohli continued on the other side. He finished the sets in terrific fashion, hitting Kumara for two sixes and a four to take India to a mammoth 390.

Gill and Kohli are building on solid foundations

Batting first after winning the toss, Team India flyhalf Rohit Sharma and Gill added 95 in 15.2 overs. After a calm start, the openers took off, plundering 23 carries on the sixth knocked down by Kumar. Rohit started with a six over midwicket, while Gill slammed four straight boundaries. The India captain then took on Rajitha and slapped him for 6, 6 and 4 as the hosts went 75/0 after 10 overs.

Rohit looked good for a big score but perished for 42 of 49, firing a short delivery from Karunaratne to the deep back square leg. Kohli looked in exquisite form early on, hitting three fours in the space of two overs. Gill and Kohli featured in a century for the second wicket to put Team India firmly in control.

Gill entered the 90s in style, hitting a four from Nuwanidu Fernando before breaking a maximum from long distance. After Kohli hit his half-century with a single against Nuwanidu in the 31st, Gill scored his second ODI cent on the next ball, driving a full long-range delivery for a single.

Both hitters opened up after hitting their respective landmarks as 18 runs passed the next on a cannonball by Vandersay. Gill’s fantastic innings ended when he was knocked down by Rajitha who was looking to up the ante even further. He was done with a slower ball, which also stayed low.

After Gill was fired, Kohli continued to be strong and lifted the hosts to an excellent total.
