Knights fans deserve better

Newcastle Knights raced in front of 21,332 fans at home against reigning Premiers Penrith Panthers.

I didn’t expect them to win, but I hoped for all the money in the world that they would fight. Penrith took a 26-0 lead at the break and a 42-6 win.

Believe it or not, I still don’t think sacking the coach is the answer and look how good it went for the Wests Tigers. They change coaches in a snap.

I understand the fans want the Knights to win the Grand Final and I’ve said it many times, we’re nowhere near premiership contenders.

I don’t like to say that, I didn’t mean to say it but I’m not going to write a bunch of fairy tale BS.

Now that we’ve sorted that out, let’s take a look at the bigger picture.

There’s more when Adam O’Brien took over from Nathan Brown. I’ve already talked about it in part, but I should summarize it a little more.

What did Adam O’Brien have when he arrived?

A team built by Nathan Brown. A team that lacks depth. Juniors who arrived with a rebuilding mindset instead of a winning culture.

I don’t know how long it will take the Knights to run for premier, but I can see what the long-term plan is.

When O’Brien was learning from Craig Bellamy, he was learning from an elite system in competition.

Melbourne is up there and they know they are there. Bringing that to Newcastle will not be an easy task.

With the signings we have made and are making, it not only gives depth to our team, but also forces our players to earn their place.

Fight for it, not just to earn it, but to keep it.

One player I can’t help but compliment is Dominic Young. The young Englishman plays without fear and is not afraid to take risks.

Now, the long-term plan that I mentioned earlier is to not only get players to develop their depth, but also to create the winning culture that we once had in our juniors.

We need to make them understand the importance of playing for the city and becoming a premier force.

I know I’ve talked about this before, but I don’t mind mentioning it so fans can see the bigger picture.

All the online bashing about the manager or players being sacked makes no difference. Our role as fans is to show support for our team.
