Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from rapper husband Kanye West after nearly seven years of marriage.
A spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Superior Court confirmed to Reuters that Kardashian filed the divorce papers on Friday.
A representative for the 40-year-old reality TV star also confirmed that she filed papers.
The grounds for the divorce were not immediately known.
TMZ said sources called the divorce “amicable,” claiming Kardashian is seeking joint legal and physical custody of the couple’s four children, which Where is is “good” with.
The U.S. entertainment news site also reports that the couple had a prenuptial agreement in place, with discussions of property regulations said to be at an advanced stage.
It follows months of speculation the couple’s marriage was in trouble, with multiple sources telling US media their “divorce is imminent” and Kardashian has hired notorious divorce lawyer Laura Wasser.
Kardashian, who rose to fame on the Keeping Up With The Kardashians reality show, married the Gold Digger West hitmaker in 2014, making him one of Hollywood’s biggest celebrity couples.
Their marriage is believed to have grown strained last year when West, 43, who suffers from bipolar disorder, ran a unsuccessful US presidential campaign marked by erratic statements under his self-proclaimed birthday party.
In July, Kardashian, who is studying to become a lawyer, defended West’s behavior in a statement calling for compassion for his mental health issues.
However, the couple appeared to continue to separate, with the 21 Grammy winner spending most of his time at his Wyoming ranch, while Kardashian resided at their Calabasas mansion outside Los Angeles.
Entertainment Sites E! News, TMZ and Variety first reported on the split and this was later confirmed by The Associated Press.
The couple married in a ceremony at a Renaissance fortress in Florence, Italy, in May 2014 and have four young children: North, Saint, Chicago and Psalm.
It was 43-year-old West’s first marriage and Kardashian’s third.
The couple were previously friends before they started dating in 2012 and had their first child, North, in 2013.
West later offered to use the giant screen of the empty San Francisco Giants baseball stadium in front of his family, and the engagement was featured in an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
The start of the marriage’s end comes after it was announced in September that her family’s reality show was ending this year after 14 years.
Kardashian was previously married to NBA player Kris Humphries, whom she divorced after 72 days of marriage in October 2011.
In 2000, 19-year-old Kardashian married music producer Damon Thomas, but Thomas filed for divorce in 2003.
