Kieran Tierney’s knee injury could sideline him for the season as Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta provides update after replacing Nuno Tavares at half-time in Premier League defeat against Crystal Palace

Arsenal may have to finish the season without left-back Kieran Tierney.

Manager Mikel Arteta has revealed a knee injury which kept him 3-0 down to Crystal Palace and looks serious which will leave fans worried about the club’s chances of finishing in the Premier League top four .

Arsenal were blown away by their London rivals at Selhurst Park to keep Tottenham in fourth place.

The first two goals saw blame attributed to Nuno Tavares – recalled in place of Tierney – but for the second game in a row he was substituted at half-time when Arteta had seen enough.

He lasted longer than his previous start, when he was hooked after 35 minutes against Nottingham Forest.

“Today was just a tactical reason,” Arteta explained.

“How I wanted to do it with what Palace were doing there and how we could attack and control the game much better in that position, put another attacking midfielder with Emile in that position. I’m sorry it’s still Nuno but we had to do it.

Gabriel Martinelli came on in his place but Wilfried Zaha ended the game with a penalty in the 74th minute.

Speaking of Tierney, Arteta said afterwards: “He came back from international duty and he felt something wrong with his knee.

“We scanned it and there is damage there.

“He sees the specialist on Tuesday and hopefully we find out more, but it’s not looking good.”

And if he is out for the season, it will be hugely problematic with nine games to go, including games against Chelsea and Man United before the end of April.

“[Arteta] changed a bit at the back, bringing out Tavares, who was involved in the first two goals and luckily he was off the pitch for the third,” Jason Cundy told Sports Bar on talkSPORT afterwards.

“Before the game Wayne Rooney told Monday Night Football he thought Tierney would be a bigger miss than Michael Olise for Palace and I wasn’t sure, but he was absolutely right.”
