Khabib Nurmagomedov announced the skills of Brazilian submission ace Charles Oliveira
Undefeated UFC icon Khabib Nurmagomedov has warned his friend and sparring partner Islam Makhachev to take threats posed by Charles Oliveira seriously ahead of their fight to crown a new lightweight champion in Abu Dhabi on October 22.
Oliveira, 32, is in the midst of an 11-fight winning streak in the UFC Shark Tanks lightweight division that has seen him rip Tony Ferguson, Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje – the last two without doubt much more categorically. that Khabib has been able to handle in his undefeated run to the top of the UFC’s 155-pound fold.
Makhachev, however, has been equally dominant in his 10-fight winning streak dating back to his last (and only) loss in the cage in 2015, but before the world title fight between two fighters in their respective primes, Khabib says that his Russian colleague needs to be at his best if he wants to win the vacant UFC lightweight title in less than two months.
“Oliveira has been around for a long timeKhabib said on his YouTube channel, after translation.
“When there’s someone on a good winning streak in your weight class, you start to see them as a potential opponent. Then you start thinking about what to do when you fight him.”
Oliveira envisions being the best submission fighter in mixed martial arts today – a statement backed up by the 21 such victories on his career record.
And Khabib says Makhachev is aware of the daunting task ahead of him in the main event of UFC 280.
“We have studied it closely and we continue to study it. He has a very good guillotine [choke]. You have to pay attention to this. His body is made for it.
“Regarding his stand-up, his very good knees and kicks. Types [kicks] to body and head. I wouldn’t say he’s strong, but he’s gained a lot of experience and confidence over the last few years.
“We are certainly not looking behind it, but we are confident that we will cross it. We just have to be careful and patient, and stick to the game plan.”
Oliveira, however, will come into the fight with something to prove. He was stripped of the UFC lightweight championship ahead of his scheduled title defense against Justin Gaethje in May after coming in half a pound at the official weigh-in.
However, he later said it was the result of his backstage weight testing on an improperly calibrated scale.
Either way, the showdown in the Middle East towards the end of October will pit the two fittest 155-pound fighters on the planet against each other – and while Khabib is convinced Islam Makhachev will be the next UFC champion , he knows that this is a destination that will not be easily accessible.
