House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has accused President Joe Biden of failing to defend Russian President Vladimir Putin in a video slip that has gone viral.
McCarthy, speaking on Fox News’ Sean Hannity show on Tuesday, criticized Biden for his handling of the Ukraine-Russia conflict.
At one point, the California Republican appeared to speak poorly and instead of saying Biden was not standing up to Putin, he said the president was not defending the Russian leader.
Clips from that moment started popping up on social media and have already been viewed over 200,000 times on Twitter.
“Now Saudi Arabia is talking about selling Chinese oil and taking the yuan as payment,” McCarthy said.
“It would devalue the US dollar as a global currency, a plan they’ve had for some time.
“Not only are enemies around the world laughing at this president, but now our allies are disrespecting him.”
McCarthy then claimed that Biden was showing weakness. He insisted that Biden should supply weapons to Ukraine and praised President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“It is a weakness that he [Joe Biden] has shown time and time again that he will not defend Putin.
“Give the Ukrainians the MiGs, let them fly in the no-fly zone. Ukraine never asked American men and women to fight for them, all they ask is” Give us arms so that we don’t have to fight with sticks”. .’
“One thing we’ve seen from this Ukrainian president, he’s ready to stand up, he’s going to talk to us tomorrow in the middle of a besieged city, with Russians all around him, wanting to say ‘Give me arms so that I can fight for freedom and defeat Putin”.
McCarthy was mocked by some Twitter users for his comments, with some wondering if he had made a Freudian slip.
“Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy complains that President Biden ‘won’t defend Putin’ in embarrassing Freudian slide on Fox News,” tweeted leftist outlet Occupy Democrats.
“Break: [Kevin McCarthy] wants the United States to ‘defend Putin,'” sports commentator Keith Olbermann said on Twitter, tweeting the video.
“Kevin McCarthy says the quiet part out loud,” Coders Against COVID co-founder Dr. Jorge Caballero joked on Twitter while sharing the video.
Newsweek has contacted McCarthy for comment.
Biden has received praise for his actions against Putin’s invasion of Ukraine despite criticism from McCarthy.
Last week, Biden announced that the United States would ban the import of Russian oil and revoke Moscow’s “most favored nation” trade status.
Meanwhile, the United States sent more than $1 billion in arms and military aid to Ukraine last year.
However, a majority of Americans are not reassured by these steps. A new CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday showed that 54% of American adults say Biden’s response to the war is making them “insecure.”
An even larger segment of the population (63%) say the president’s response makes them “nervous.” Only about a third said the answer made them “confident” (33%) and “secure” (32%).
