Natasha Jonas could raise an objection over the judges for her fight against Katie Taylor with coach Joe Gallagher warning that “the eyes of the world are watching”.
Jonas challenges Taylor for undisputed lightweight world titles on May 1 live on Sky Sports Box Office, in a rehearsal of their epic encounter at the London 2012 Olympics.
But coach Gallagher has revealed how ring officials will come under scrutiny, with the Liverpudlian team even set to file a formal complaint.
“There have been question marks over a few decisions by Katie Taylor and the decision by Natasha Jonas, so we want the best judges the governing bodies have at ringside,” said Gallagher. Sky Sports.
“We want everyone to talk about the quality of this fight and not the controversial scorecards.
“We will find out who the judges assigned to the fight are and if there are any who are not to our satisfaction, we will raise an objection with the British Boxing Board of Control and the governing bodies.
“We would like to know who they are, the sooner the better.”
Jonas was denied a world title triumph last summer when she had to settle for a hotly contested draw with WBC super-featherweight champion Terri Harper.
Gallagher also believes Taylor was fortunate to receive a majority decision in his world title defense against Delfine Persoon in 2019.
“If you look at Natasha Jonas and Terri Harper, everyone in the world thinks Natasha won that night except for two people,” Gallagher said.
“Then you saw Katie Taylor vs. Delfine Persoon, everyone in the world thinks Persoon won first, but Katie Taylor got it.
The eyes of the world are watching this and I can’t let Natasha Jonas come out of this fight, feel tough like she’s already done with the Terri Harper fight.
“They’ve both been involved in fights with contentious scores. We have to make sure it’s not the right thing for this fight, and the good girl deserves it that night.
“Not what she’s done in the past or what she’s got now, or she came to the ring as a champion. Whoever did the best, scores for the shots on the landing, and let’s focus- us on the fight.
“All the bases need to be covered, even down to the judges, but also the referee. The referees play a huge role. They are very cute who they can say ‘pause’, who they can push back, give rest to people. time.
“The eyes of the world are watching this and I can’t let Natasha Jonas come out of this fight feeling tough, like she once did with the Terri Harper fight.”
