Katie Taylor grew up supporting Leeds, but it was Manchester United hero Roy Keane who won the undisputed boxing champion from their lowest point.

Katie Taylor comes from a family of Leeds United fans and they will be cheering her on again during her historic showdown with Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden this weekend.

But it was Manchester United legend Roy Keane who lifted the boxer when she was at her lowest point.

Irish boxer Taylor won gold at London 2012 and suffered a shock quarter-final defeat at Rio 2016 in her bid to defend her title.

A surprise call from Keane came after that loss.

“When I lost at the Olympics in Rio, the first phone call I got was actually from Roy Keane,” Taylor told theDaily mailin an interview in 2019.

“He told me ‘keep your head up’. And he was very, very positive and that really makes my heart so happy.

“He went out of his way, and it meant so much to me that one of my heroes, someone I really looked up to as a kid, called me down at the low point of my career.

“These are the things you don’t see. He has a big heart. And he’s someone who doesn’t seek any stars for that sort of thing. It was just out of the goodness of my heart.

Taylor will defend her world titles against Serrano this weekend in a clash billed as the greatest women’s fight of all time.

The 20-0 fighter will become the latest name to grace New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden and she can’t wait.

The Bray Bomber said: “These are the kind of nights you absolutely crave.

“These big, huge, mega fights are the kind of fights I’ve always wanted to be involved in since I was a kid.

“I’m so excited about it. These are the kinds of fights I feel like I was born to fight.

“It will be the toughest fight of my career, of our two careers, I think. I sincerely believe this is the biggest fight in boxing right now. This is a real 50-50 fight and it will take a lot of heart and a lot of courage and we will definitely be in the trenches.

“I try to make the most of my time in the sport.

“I don’t know how many years I have left in the sport. I just want to keep making history in the sport and keep pushing the boundaries and I want to be involved in those big mega fights.
