Karim Benzema is only behind Cristiano Ronaldo in Real Madrid’s goalscoring charts as his 324th club goal helps them win the Super Cup against Eintracht Frankfurt

Karim Benzema leapfrogged Raul in Real Madrid’s all-time goalscoring charts as his strike helped them to a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Super Cup.

The French striker got past Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp in the 65th minute after being tackled by Champions League final hero Vinicius Jr.

Earlier, David Alaba scored in the first half. The Austrian defender ducked into an empty net after Casemiro did well to earn a header on the touchline from a corner.

And Benzema’s goal, his first of the season and 324th for Real Madrid, killed the tie as the European champions earned a deserved victory over last season’s Europa League winners.

As mentioned, Benzema is now ahead of Raul for Real Madrid goals which means he is their second all-time top scorer.

Only Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more Los Blancos goals with the Portuguese netting 450 times for them.

Benzema was a supporting act before Ronaldo left the club in 2018 and has recently admitted his role has changed following Ronaldo’s departure.

Benzema explained before the game: “It’s different for me since Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid.

“It’s true that I scored a lot more goals, but when Cristiano was there, we had a different style of play, I made more assists.

“He really helped me on and off the pitch.

“But in that moment I knew I could do more and when he left it was time to change my game, change my ambitions and I’m doing that well right now.”

At 34, Benzema seems unlikely to catch up with Ronaldo’s superb run. But the speed at which it wins, you wouldn’t outrun it to do it.
