Kansas lawmaker accused of assaulting high school student | New

WELLSVILLE, KS (KCTV) – A Kansas state official has been arrested on charges of indictment.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office named 36-year-old Mark Samsel as the person arrested and said deputies made the arrest Thursday following an investigation into an April 28 incident between a teacher substitute and a student.

A statement on the matter also noted that Samsel is no longer in custody after posting bail on Thursday.

Samsel has represented Wellsville at Kansas Statehouse since 2019.

The district superintendent did not name Samsel, but said there had been “an incident involving a substitute teacher” at the high school which was reported by a student to a staff member.

“At that point, we immediately opened an investigation and, as part of that investigation, contacted the appropriate agencies,” Wellsville School District Superintendent Ryan Bradbury said Friday.

Bradbury would not give more details, citing student privacy, employee confidentiality and the ongoing nature of the police investigation.

“We want to be transparent, but privacy laws prevent us from doing that in this case,” Bradbury said. “But I can say that the substitute teacher involved in this incident is not and will not be returning.”

KCTV5 went to Samsel’s home, texted and called his phone to get his answer. Friday at 10 p.m., he had not responded.

Residents of the small town shared strong feelings on Facebook, but KCTV5 couldn’t find any to comment on the camera other than the director.

“There are going to be situations in every community that they face, and we will come together and support our students and parents throughout this process,” Bradbury noted.

KCTV5 received a cell phone video that circulated on social media but has not yet been able to verify its authenticity.

Samsel serves in the Republican Party. Their leaders sent this statement on Friday:

“We learned today that Representative Mark Samsel was involved in an incident and law enforcement has been contacted. We are not yet aware of the details, but are in the process of collecting as much information as possible. “ is now with you on the go!
